Ruby is a variety of the Corundum family. It has a rhombohedral crystal system, and its color is due to the presence of aluminum oxide.

It is often called "The Stone of Kings." Its rightful place is upon the crowns of sovereigns, the wielders of power.

Rubies are formed primarily (but not exclusively) in white marble. The main producing countries are Burma, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
